Cult Of Luna - Vertikal

 

In 2013, Swedish 7-piece Cult Of Luna released their 6th album Vertikal. Being 5 years since the previous album "Eternal Kingdom", it is clear that the band have put a serious amount of work into making this an album to remember. Dubbed as "atmospheric sludge metal" each track has a very dark undertone but nevertheless speaks in volumes. The instrumental sections consist of heavy hitting and groovy riffs, simple but powerful drums, and a keyboard composition that feels relaxing even when all other aspects of the music seem overwhelming. The transitions between sections are flawless and smooth regardless of how different the two might be and, as bold a statement as this might be, Cult Of Luna may just be the definition of the musical term "dynamics" as can be clearly witnessed through this album.
